In days of yore, Sundays were named for the first Latin word of the Introit Antiphon of the Mass. The Introit of the 3rd Sunday of Advent came from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians which was always read as the first reading (there were only two readings in those days): Gaudete “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice.” Halfway through Advent, rose vestments were used, pink flowers decorated the altar, and the organ, which was silent during the rest of Advent, was played. The festive atmosphere indicated the Church’s joy that Christmas was near. |

Recently the priests of the parish were blessed to receive spiritual bouquets from many parishioners, along with sentiments of encouragement and support. It took a while for all these to filter down to all of us. Thank you to all who participated in this project. Thank you also to all of the others who continually support us with your prayers. |

Some years ago, I heard the saintly moral theologian, Father Bernard Haering, respond to the following question: “Are you optimistic about what is going on today?” Father Haering said: “I am not optimistic, but I have hope.” That answer reflected Father Haering’s profound trust in the Providence of God. Things do not have to go well in human terms for God’s will to be done. |
