This week we celebrate our nation's Thanksgiving Day. We have so much for which to be thankful. In a world where there is so much violence and poverty, where natural disasters occur suddenly and destroy or radically change people's lives, we can be thankful for food, shelter and safety. At a time when so many are out of work and financially struggling, we can be thankful if we have employment. In a culture in which so many have abandoned God and the ways of faith, we can be grateful if we are still holding fast to our beliefs and still practicing our religion.

Every October we count attendance at all the Masses. This practice is required by the Diocese of Oakland. Attendance in 2009 remained almost exactly what it was in 2008. This is good news. In previous years attendance had slightly decreased. We have not regained the losses, but we have not lost any more.

We hope and pray that the flu season will pass quickly with few casualties so that we can return to our normal practices at worship. In the meantime, the Diocese of Oakland has advised us that this might be an opportunity to review some important items. One of these is the manner of receiving Holy Communion.
